Andrea & Tristan

A couple of weeks ago, I hit the city streets of Perth one night with my friend Andrea and her husband Tristan.  Although I have taken many a photos of cityscapes and street photographs at night, I haven’t actually photographed a whole portrait session at twilight, so to say that this shoot was intriguing and amazing, would be an understatement.

I’m so glad we did it though, because I’m ecstatic with how the images turned out, not just because together we took some beautiful photographs in some very tricky lighting conditions, but looking through them, it’s obvious to me how in love Andrea and Tristan are. It truly makes my heart happy to see these images. Thanks for an awesome night out guys!

Kristen Chiera - Oh Carla these are beautiful. You’ve done such a magic job with capturing the romantic light at twilight. Your hard work is paying off. Before long you’ll be asked to photography Brangelina at their wedding!!!

Carla - Thank you Kristen, although you are way too kind! Brangelina wedding? I think I’m light years away from that one :) xx

Colour Your World…

So, I’ve received several email enquiries over the last couple of weeks with people asking me if I can shoot a portrait session in colour also?  I’ve answered all emails with the same response, which bascially came down to three letters…Yes.  Yes, of course I can shoot in colour and I can print photographs of you in colour also.

It’s no secret, I LOVE black and white photographs. To me they represent the epitome of romance, sophistication, elegance and timelessness. But, with that being said, I also know that people feel this exact way about colour images too. So I decided to add this new blog post to let you all know that I’ll be offering you colour images and black and white images within your private online gallery after your session so you can have the option of colouring your world too.

Below is one of my favourite coloured images I wanted to share with you.

Tara - I will always love your black & whites!! :)

Carla Atley - Thanks Tara! I will predominately still be shooting in B&W, but I’ll offer some colour pics within their gallery too. There’s no way I’d totally leave B&Ws, we’re BFF! :) xx

Angela & Kim

So, as I mentioned in my last post, I’ve started spending more time committed to making sure all my photos have “heart value”.  Heart value, meaning that I want to view each photograph and feel love, happiness, joy, sadness…or any emotion, as long as it’s honest and it makes me feel.

Enter Angela and Kim, a very heart warming, funny and recently engaged couple I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with one recent afternoon.  The time spent with Ange and Kim just flew by and I did not stop laughing throughout the whole shoot (did I mention they were funny?)!

An amazing photographer, Jesh De Rox, told me that you often receive authenticity in proportion to how much you give it, if you want people to be moved when they see your work, you must be moved while making it and I can honestly say first hand, that it’s exactly what happens. I enjoyed my time with Angela and Kim so much, that whenever I see these images, I instantly feel joy again. Hopefully you will too.

Family Love

So this is me and my beautiful sister….Sister you say?? You guys look nothing alike! Well, I’ve heard that before, but unfortunately there’s no elaborate story here to explain why, it’s just a case of one of us taking after my Dad and the other after my Mum. I’m the blonde one with the white Scottish skin, whereas Jennifer was blessed with the exotic looking genes of olive skin and dark hair.

These 2 photos were taken Christmas day 2011, they aren’t professional photos and they weren’t staged, in fact they weren’t even taken on a proper camera, but I love them more than any other photo ever taken of us. Why?…I love them because it shows the connection that we share, how much we love each other and how happy we looked at that moment.

Looking back through shoe boxes of old photographs I noticed a trend emerging, photographs taken by my grandfather of the family back in the 50s were special, the family looked relax, the portraits looked real. But as I got closer to 90s and especially the 2000s the authenticity of the photographs started losing their appeal. The people in the photos didn’t get any less special to me, but the connection wasn’t visible.

Due to the advancements of digital photography, it’s become all too easy to take many photos of everyday events in our lives, but when I look back, almost all of these ‘everyday’ photos (which are beautiful in their own right) don’t look authentic. The special-ness of capturing a meaningful moment has gotten lost, or so it seemed to me. Which brings me in a round about way to why I’ve uploaded these 2 photos. Getting into the spirit of New Year Resolutions I’ve decided I’m going to make sure that each photo I take from now on has heart value, meaning I want to look at mine, and I want you to look at yours and absolutely love what you see just as I did after seeing these images. And you know what else I’ve discovered? You actually look ‘better’ when you’re photographed coming from love. Now how special is that!

So here’s to a magical year ahead. A new year for all of us that I’m sure, will be filled with more discoveries, joy and love.
